How do you become an effective manager?

An effective manager values its staff and knows that they are one of the main assets of the organisation. They are responsible for the daily functioning of the company and keep the engine running to meet company objectives. It is crucial for those in management positions to understand and support their staff. When you perform well, you can assist the organisation in keeping safe, hardworking and faithful staff.

It’s not always simple to be an ideal manager. There are numerous leadership errors that you must avoid along the way. To assist you to become an effective manager, there are 12 behaviours and personalities all managers should follow..

Not everyone is a born manager, but knowing and operating closely with these characteristics is definitely the main step towards building your abilities as an effective manager:

  1. An effective manager recognises the importance of staff. 

By underestimating the efforts of the employees and their added importance, this can contribute to dissatisfied, unmotivated and poor workforce. It could even contribute to an increase in employee turnover.

  1. Alway expresses their appreciation to their employees for the good work they have achieved.

A straightforward ‘thanks’ can be a large distinction for many staff, but give positive feedback as much as possible. This will increase motivation and productivity.

  1. Good clear communication is important for employees to understand what is expected of them.

As an effective manager, it is your task to interact with employees individually and as a team, so everyone is aware of what they are required to do.

  1. Listen to your employees.

It is important to be available to your employees whether it be a work or personal matter. It shows your employees that you are there to support them and that they have someone to talk to.

  1. Be able to make decisions

It is important to be able to lead your team in the right direction. If you are indecisive this does not give your staff much confidence which will not help with productivity.

  1. Have confidence and trust in your employees

An effective manager should give their staff the opportunity to complete the tasks you have delegated, however, be sure to delegate to their strengths. This will help the employee gain confidence once they achieve their task.

  1. Be able to deal with conflict.

It is important for a manager to assist in resolving conflict to ensure matters do not get out of hand. These situations can sometimes be important to maintain a safe, happy and productive workplace.

  1. Understand your staff

Be aware of each individuals key strengths, weaknesses and find out what motivates them. Be understanding of their differences and their needs.

  1. Be a role model

Set an example to your staff by being honest, dedicated, motivated, hard working and most importantly, be a leader!

  1. Be open and honest always

Never mislead your staff or withhold information that is required to be shared. Staff need to be able to trust their manager is doing the right thing and leading them in the right direction. This can also damage the relationships between the manager and employer.

  1. Show that you deserve to be in the position you are.

If employees see that you have the skills and knowledge to lead the team, they will have the confidence that they are moving in the right direction and will work with you to achieve goals.

A good manager does not hide away in their office. Be around, interact and be available!

  1. Continue to learn and grow

Always ensure you are ahead in terms of knowledge, skills and requirements to do your job. There is always room to grow. Never stop learning.
